Snakes

Tue Mar 11, 2008, 8:54 PM
The other day my wife and I went to a pet store and looked around. The problem with pets is that I'm allergic to about everything with fur or feathers, so that rules out the majority of common pets.

I like animals, but cats, which I like the best, are what I am most allergic to. Fortunately I'm not allergic to reptiles (hello? No dander there...) and I really like them. So, the pet shop had some snakes and geckos. My wife prefers the gecko and I prefer the snakes.

So, after that I pretty much forgot about it, but yesterday, for some reason, I remembered about it and got really excited about getting a snake. So, I looked up information on ball pythons and found that they would be what I would want. My wife, being the unreasonably reasonable person that she is, said that we don't have room to put the terrarium, and, if that wasn't a big enough issue, she said that we can't afford it (which is true). I tried really hard to come up with placs to put the terrarium, like on top of the entertainment center, but she had to have her way...

Honestly, I'm not too upset, but I would like to get a snake someday.

:giggle: Good luck. I had a baby corn snake for, oh, three weeks before it escaped. The darn thing refused to eat, which was sad.

You could always start out small and then get a bigger snake later. Garter or corn snakes are relatively inexpensive and need a much smaller tank (10 gallon, which will fit on a t.v. tray table). They're really quite cute. :)

If you're worried about dander but still want something fuzzy...small rodents don't seem to have a problem. *dragonsthatservegod is very allergic to guinea pigs, but handles my gerbils and hamsters without an issue. Not to mention they're dirt cheap if you adopt them at a shelter, and upkeep is fairly inexpensive. My pet bills for six rodents run about $25 a month, and I use the more expensive bedding.

Actually, I believe corn snakes grow to be somewhat bigger than ball pythons, but I could be wrong. And, it isn't TOO unusual for snakes to go as long as a month or two without eating, but generally they will eat about once a week.

As to rodents, I don't care for them.

I'm not sure on the specs for a ball python...but corn snakes get up to 3-4 feet in length and, for the first couple of years, only need a 10-gallon tank. My main draw to those guys is their color...wow, they're pretty.

Ah. I understand now about the rodents. :) You probably wouldn't be thrilled about the fact that I'm in the process of trying to breed two of my gerbils. :XD:

Feel free to breed them. There will always be a need for snake chow.
